B2B SEO consultant: what the work is and what it is not.
By Vijay Ara, Founder, BizIntegra Truro, Nova Scotia Updated October 25, 2026
A B2B SEO consultant works on slow, high-value buying decisions where ten searches a month can matter more than ten thousand. The job is to get the right few people to find you, trust you and ask for a quote.

Consumer SEO and B2B SEO are different jobs
Most SEO advice is written for businesses that sell to the public: fast decisions, big keyword volumes, simple checkouts. B2B turns that upside down. The buyer may be one of four people reviewing your site over three months. The deal might be worth fifty thousand dollars. The monthly search volume for the phrase that matters could be thirty.
A consultant who judges success by traffic will misread this market. A B2B site that gets 400 visits a month from the right people can be doing better than a site with 40,000 from the wrong ones.
Small keyword numbers, large deals
Keyword tools show estimated volumes, and for industrial, professional and software services those numbers look tiny. That is normal. Someone searching for "SOC 2 audit for a SaaS startup" or "custom conveyor systems for food processing" is not browsing. They have a budget and a deadline.
So a B2B consultant works from the bottom of the funnel upward. First the phrases that signal a buying decision: service plus industry, service plus location, comparisons, pricing questions, "alternatives to" searches. Then the problem-stage content that earns trust earlier, such as how a process works, what a project costs to run, or what mistakes to avoid.
Beware of anyone who wants to chase broad head terms first. Ranking for a generic phrase with ten thousand searches rarely produces a qualified enquiry for a niche supplier.
Long sales cycles change the content
A long cycle means your site is read several times by several people. A technical lead checks specifications. A finance person looks for terms and credibility. An executive wants to know whether you are real. One homepage cannot serve all of them.
Good B2B SEO therefore builds a small number of strong pages, each aimed at one decision: a service page for each offer, an industry page where your experience differs, case-style pages when you have real work to show, and clear next steps on every page. A phone number, a quote form and a named person do more than a blog full of general advice.
Be honest about proof. If you do not have published results or permission to name clients, say what you can say truthfully: your process, your certifications, your location, your response time. Invented authority gets noticed.
What the consultant works on, in order
The work usually runs in a sequence. First is the technical base: whether Google can crawl and index the pages that matter, whether old URLs redirect properly, whether duplicate or near-empty pages exist, and whether the site is fast on a phone and on a slow office connection.
Second comes the page map. The task is deciding which services, industries and locations deserve their own page. B2B sites often have one overloaded "Services" page that tries to rank for everything and ranks for nothing.
Then the content for the buying journey, internal links that move people from an article to a service page, and structured data where it helps. Last is measurement: form submissions, calls and booked meetings tied back to the search pages that produced them. Rankings are a diagnostic, not the goal.
Many B2B teams also care about being cited in AI search answers. That is a real channel, and we cover it under AI search work (GEO). It rewards clear, factual pages that state who you serve and what you do, which is the same discipline as classic SEO.
Reporting that a B2B owner can use
Because volumes are small, percentages mislead. A jump of 200 percent from five visits to fifteen is a rounding error. Ask for reports in whole numbers that matter: qualified enquiries, quote requests, calls from the right region, and which pages those people landed on first.
Connect search data to your own records. If sales staff note where each lead heard about you, the pattern shows which pages deserve more work. If they do not, a simple "how did you find us" field on the quote form fixes that for free.
Expect honest uncertainty too. B2B enquiries arrive in lumps, and one quiet month does not mean the work failed. A good consultant looks at quarters, not weeks, and says so before you sign.
Where we fit and where we do not
BizIntegra is a founder-led studio in Truro, Nova Scotia, working remotely across Canada in English and French. The founder has 25 years in IT, which helps when your product is technical and the buyer is too.
We are a good fit for a manufacturer, professional service firm or software company that wants a clear audit, a fixed written price and honest advice on what to fix first. Our free SEO evaluation is the first step: about two to three days, no card, no commitment.
Paid media, outbound campaigns, PR distribution and large-scale link building are not our work. We are not the right fit if you want a team for those. For a very large B2B site with thousands of pages, our work on VisaTalents, with more than 40,000 generated pages, is relevant experience for crawl and indexing questions. We never guarantee rankings, and no consultant honest about B2B should.
Questions
What does a B2B SEO consultant do?
They fix technical problems, map your services and industries to pages, write or direct content for each buying stage, and measure enquiries rather than traffic. The aim is a few qualified leads, not a big visitor count.
Is B2B SEO worth it with low search volume?
Often yes, when deals are large. A handful of qualified enquiries a month can justify the work. It is worth checking your average deal value and close rate before you decide.
How long does B2B SEO take?
Technical fixes can show in weeks. Competitive terms usually take months, and long sales cycles mean the revenue arrives after that. Plan for a long horizon.
Do I need a B2B specialist or a general SEO consultant?
A good consultant who understands your buyer and your sales cycle matters more than the label. Ask how they would measure success when search volume is small.
