Search engine optimisation companies in Canada: which size suits which business.
By Vijay Ara, Founder, BizIntegra Truro, Nova Scotia Updated October 25, 2026
The right search engine optimisation agency depends less on its reputation than on its size. A freelancer, a boutique studio and a national firm each suit a different kind of business.

Start with size, not with a ranking list
Search engine optimisation companies in Canada range from one person working from a spare room to firms with offices in several cities and a sales team. People often shop them the same way, by comparing prices and badges. That misses the point. The useful question is which size of provider matches the size of your problem.
Here are the four types you will meet, with an honest view of what each does well.
Independent freelancers
A freelancer is cheap to hire and quick to start. You usually deal with the person who does the work, which is a real advantage. The limits are capacity and range. One person rarely covers technical SEO, content, local listings and development equally well, and if they are sick or busy, your project waits.
Freelancers suit small sites with a clear, narrow need: a local business that needs its Google Business Profile and a dozen service pages sorted out. Ask who covers for them and where your files and accounts live.
Boutique studios
Boutique studios sit between a freelancer and an agency: a small team, often led by a founder, that takes fewer clients and gets involved in the details. Communication is direct, scope is usually flexible, and the people who sell the work tend to be the people doing it.
This is where we sit. BizIntegra is founder-led, based in Truro, Nova Scotia, and works across Canada remotely, in English and French. The founder has 25 years in IT, so technical issues such as redirects, canonical tags, crawl problems and slow themes get looked at properly. A studio like ours is a good fit for owner-run businesses and online stores that want a real conversation and a fixed, written price.
It is a weaker fit for a company that needs a dedicated team across five departments, a legal review process or a procurement department that only deals with approved vendors.
Mid-size agencies
Mid-size agencies bring specialists: separate people for content, technical work, analytics and account management. That depth helps when you run several locations, a large catalogue or a campaign that spans search, paid media and email.
The trade-off is that you may meet a polished senior person during the sales process and a junior one during delivery. Ask who your day-to-day contact is, and ask how many accounts they manage. Prices reflect the overhead, and minimum terms are often longer.
Large national and enterprise firms
Big firms handle complexity: huge sites, many brands, regulated industries, international rollouts. If you are a bank, a retailer with thousands of products across provinces or a company with a board that wants slides every quarter, this is the category built for you.
For a small business it is usually the wrong tool. You will be a small account in a large process, and the cost of the structure sits inside the price.
In-house teams and white-label partners
Two other options sit outside the usual list. Some companies hire an in-house SEO person. That works when you have enough ongoing content and development to keep someone busy, and when you can pay for a senior hire rather than a junior learning on your site. One in-house generalist still needs outside help for audits and technical fixes.
Another option is a white-label partner. Marketing and web agencies sometimes sell SEO under their own name and hand the technical delivery to a specialist. We do this kind of work for agencies, and the page on white-label explains how it runs. If you are a business owner rather than an agency, you do not need to care about this category, except to ask whether your provider is doing the work or reselling it.
How to compare two providers of different sizes
Do not compare price first. Compare who will be on your account, what they will change on your site in the first month, how they report, and how you leave. A freelancer quoting less than a mid-size agency is not necessarily cheaper once you count the missing services, and a larger firm quoting more is not necessarily better value.
Send the same short brief to each. A useful reply names two or three problems specific to your website. A weak reply repeats generic promises about visibility and traffic.
Location, language and what professional search engine optimisation means here
Professional search engine optimisation is not defined by an office address. Because SEO is delivered online, a good provider in another province can work for you as well as one down the street. What matters more is that they understand your market: bilingual search in Quebec and New Brunswick, hreflang for English and French pages, local intent in a specific city, or Canadian pricing and shipping on a store.
If you serve a single town, local knowledge helps with Google Business Profile categories and nearby directories. If you serve customers across the country, look for someone comfortable with several provinces. We have pages for Nova Scotia, Ontario, the Greater Toronto Area, Western Canada and Quebec if you want to see how we think about each region.
Whatever size you choose, the basics do not change. Ask for a written scope, ownership of your accounts and content, reporting on leads, and no guaranteed rankings. Those four rules apply to the freelancer and the national firm alike.
Questions
How do I choose the best search engine optimisation company in Canada?
Match the provider's size to your need. Small owner-run sites usually do well with a freelancer or boutique studio. Multi-location or enterprise sites may need an agency with specialists. Then check the written scope, reporting and exit terms.
Does my SEO company need to be in my province?
Not for most work. SEO is done online, and a remote provider can serve you well if they understand your market. Local knowledge helps most for Google Business Profile and city-level competition.
Do you work with agencies as well as direct clients?
Yes. We do white-label SEO work for agencies that need a technical partner without hiring in-house.
Is a bigger search engine optimisation agency always better?
No. A bigger firm brings more specialists and more process, which suits complex sites. For a small business it can mean higher cost and less direct contact with the person doing the work.
