Hire an SEO expert: one person or a firm, and what to hand over.
By Vijay Ara, Founder, BizIntegra Truro, Nova Scotia Updated October 25, 2026
If you want to hire an SEO expert, the first decision is whether you need one person or a team. The second is what you give them in the first week, because that decides how the first month goes.

One expert or a firm
Hire one expert when the problem is understood and the site is modest: a service business with a few dozen pages, an online store with a clean catalogue, a site that has lost traffic after a redesign. One senior person can diagnose it, fix the worst of it and tell you what to do next.
A firm makes sense when the work needs several skills at once and constant volume: writing hundreds of pages, running campaigns in two languages, supporting several locations, or reporting to a board. Then you want specialists and a process, and you accept the overhead that comes with them.
Plenty of businesses sit in between. A founder-led studio gives you one accountable person with the option of other hands when a project grows. That is the model we use.
What "expert" should mean
Nobody regulates the word, so anyone can use it. Look for evidence of depth, not a title. Can they explain, in plain English, why a page is not being indexed? Do they know the difference between a canonical tag and a redirect and when to use each? Can they read a Search Console coverage report and tell you what is noise?
Real experts also say what sits outside their skill. SEO touches design, copywriting, development and sometimes paid advertising. Someone who claims to be brilliant at all of it is overselling.
Our founder has 25 years in IT, which shows most in the technical side: crawl behaviour, site speed, structured data, platform quirks in Shopify and WordPress. We also manage a data-driven site with more than 40,000 generated pages, VisaTalents, so we have dealt with indexing and caching at a scale most small sites never reach. If your site is small, that matters less than a careful look at your basics.
What to give them
Most failed engagements start with a thin brief. Before the first call, collect what an expert needs and would otherwise have to ask for.
Give them read access to Search Console and your analytics, a list of the services or products that make you the most money, the areas you serve, and the three competitors you worry about. Add anything unusual: a redesign last year, a platform change, a penalty notice, a seasonal peak.
Tell them what a customer is worth. An enquiry from a service business that earns a few thousand dollars per job justifies different work than a twenty dollar product page. If you cannot put a number on it, say so, and a decent expert will help you estimate.
Keep admin access in your own hands until you have agreed what will change. You can always grant it later, and you should always be able to remove it.
The first 30 days
Week one is diagnosis. Your expert reviews the site, the Search Console data, your Google Business Profile if you serve local customers, and the competitors. You should receive questions, not a pitch.
By week two you should hold a written list of findings, ranked by likely impact. It should say what to fix, why it matters and what is not worth touching. Agree the scope and price in writing at this point. Expect a fixed number for a defined piece of work, not an open-ended invoice.
Fixes begin in weeks three and four. Typical early wins are broken or chained redirects, duplicate pages, missing titles and descriptions, weak internal links, a slow image-heavy theme, and Google Business Profile categories that do not match what you sell. Technical fixes can show up in weeks.
Do not expect ranking jumps on competitive terms in thirty days. Those usually take months, and someone who promises otherwise is guessing or selling.
Questions to ask before you say yes
Put a few direct questions to any candidate. Find out what they would look at first on your site, and why. Find out what they would refuse to do, how they will report and in which numbers, and who owns the content and accounts when you stop.
Listen for specifics. An experienced person will mention things like indexing, page templates, local categories or internal links within the first few minutes, tied to your site rather than recited. They will also ask you something back, usually about your customers or your sales process.
Check the price structure last, not first. A fixed price for a defined audit or first round of fixes lets you judge the work before committing to more. Hourly or monthly arrangements can be fine later, once you trust the quality.
Signs the engagement is going wrong
Three signs matter. The first is jargon without decisions: reports full of acronyms and no recommended action. The second is silence after the first payment. The third is a push to start link buying or mass content before the basics are fixed.
We would not take a job where the owner wants guaranteed positions by a fixed date. We do not guarantee rankings, and we do not sell backlink packages.
Questions
Should I hire an SEO expert or an agency?
Choose one expert if the site is small and the need is clear. Choose an agency if you need many skills at once, such as large-scale content, several locations or multilingual campaigns. A founder-led studio can sit between the two.
What should I look for when I hire an SEO expert?
Look for plain-English explanations of your own site, a ranked list of fixes, written scope and price, and honesty about what SEO cannot do. Ask for references from clients with similar sites.
Do I need to give an SEO expert admin access?
Not at the start. Read access to Search Console and analytics is enough for diagnosis. Grant admin only when you have agreed what they will change.
Can I try an expert before committing?
You should be able to. We offer a free SEO evaluation with no card and no commitment, delivered in plain English in about two to three days.
