Shopify SEO: agency, expert or do it yourself?
By Vijay Ara, Founder, BizIntegra Truro, Nova Scotia Updated October 25, 2026
Most Shopify stores can fix the basics themselves in a weekend. Pay a Shopify SEO agency or an ecommerce SEO expert when the catalogue is large, traffic has stalled after the basics, or a migration is coming.

What an ecommerce SEO expert works on
On a Shopify store the biggest gains are usually in collection pages, product pages, page speed and clear site structure. An expert reviews these, fixes duplicated or thin content and makes sure Google can read what each page sells.
They check the plumbing too: whether the same product is reachable at several addresses, whether filters create hundreds of near-empty pages, whether discontinued products redirect somewhere useful, and whether product markup shows the right price and stock status.
They also look at how the store appears in AI answers and shopping results, because shoppers now ask assistants as well as search engines.
What you can do yourself first
Write a clear title and description for your main collections, add real descriptions to your best-selling products, compress large images and remove apps you no longer use. These are free or cheap and often make a visible difference.
Then open Search Console and look at two reports: which pages Google has not indexed, and which queries already show your store without getting clicks. The second list is a ready-made to-do list, because those pages need a better title or fuller copy, not a new strategy.
Give this a month. If you have done the basics and the numbers are flat, that is the signal to look at paid help.
Agency or expert: which fits
A larger Shopify SEO agency suits a store with a big team, a content calendar and a budget for several people at once. You get breadth, and usually a layer of account management between you and the person doing the work.
A single ecommerce SEO expert suits most small and mid-size stores. You talk to the person who edits your theme and reads your reports, decisions are quick, and you are not paying for meetings. The trade-off is that one person has limits on how many things can move at once, so ask what they would do first and what they would leave alone.
We are a founder-led studio in Truro, Nova Scotia, working remotely across Canada, so you deal with the person doing the work.
When paying for help is worth it
Bring in help when the store has many products, when you have tried the basics and sales have stalled, or when you are about to rebuild or migrate. A migration done without a redirect plan can erase years of search history in a weekend.
Be wary of anyone who guarantees rankings, sells a package before looking at your store, or reports only on keyword positions. Ask for findings in plain English, a written scope and price, and a clear statement of what will and will not be changed on the theme.
Realistic timing: technical fixes can show within weeks once Google recrawls, and competitive collection terms usually take months. We never promise a ranking date.
What the first month usually looks like
Week one is diagnosis: crawl the store, read the Search Console reports, and list what is wrong in order of how much it costs you. Weeks two and three are the structural fixes, such as duplicate URLs, bloated apps, thin collection pages and broken redirects. The last week is content on the pages that already almost rank.
You should end the month with a short written list of what changed, what is still open and what you can safely leave alone. If a provider cannot show you that, you are paying for activity, not progress.
Who should skip hiring us
If your store has a handful of products and you have not yet touched titles, descriptions or images, do those first. If your problem is that nobody knows the brand, SEO will not fix that on its own either.
Start with a free SEO evaluation: it tells you what to fix first, and whether you need us at all. Ecommerce SEO with us is scoped and priced in writing, never bundled, with no retainer to sign.
Questions
Do I need a Shopify SEO agency?
Not always. Many stores can improve by fixing titles, descriptions, images and speed themselves. An agency helps with large catalogues, stalled traffic or a migration.
What does an ecommerce SEO expert do?
They review collections, product pages, speed and structure, fix what holds the store back and report in sales and traffic rather than rankings alone.
Is a Shopify SEO app enough?
Apps can help with meta tags and sitemaps, but they cannot decide your collection structure or clean up a heavy theme, and each one adds weight to your pages.
How do I get started?
Send your store address for a free SEO evaluation. You will get a plain-English list of fixes ranked by impact.
