Shopify development and SEO: build them together.
By Vijay Ara, Founder, BizIntegra Truro, Nova Scotia Updated October 25, 2026
Most SEO problems on a new store are decided in the first week of the build, long before anyone talks about rankings. That is the argument for a Shopify development and SEO agency, and also where the argument stops.

The expensive mistakes happen before launch
A common story: a store is built by a designer who cares about looks, launched, and only then handed to someone for SEO. The SEO person finds that collections are named for internal convenience, product titles are in the wrong order, the theme loads six apps on every page and the old site's URLs were never redirected.
Each of those is fixable, but fixing them after launch costs more than getting them right while the store was still being assembled. That is the honest case for treating development and SEO as one job.
URL structure and collections
The platform fixes some of the URL pattern for you: products live under /products/ and collections under /collections/. What you control is the handle, the collection hierarchy and how products are grouped. Those choices decide which category pages can ever rank. If you have searched for a "Shopify development & SEO agency", the idea is simple: one team that builds the store and also keeps it findable.
Planning collections around how customers search, rather than how a warehouse stores items, is a build task and an SEO task at once. A rushed structure is hard to change later without redirects and a temporary dip.
Speed is a theme decision
Page speed on Shopify is mostly about the theme and the apps. A heavy theme with sliders, animations and several font files starts slow, and no later SEO work fully repairs it. Choosing a lean theme, compressing images and loading only the scripts a page needs is development work done with SEO in mind.
Our preference is a plain, quick store with features added one at a time, rather than everything switched on and a long subtraction job later.
Product data and templates
Titles, descriptions, image alt text and variant names are entered during the build, usually by whoever is in a hurry. Setting a simple pattern early (product name first, then the one detail a buyer cares about) saves a re-edit of hundreds of products later.
Templates matter as well. The product template decides where the heading, price, description and reviews sit in the HTML, and whether structured data is output once and correctly. Agreeing on this before the theme is customized is far cheaper than patching it after.
Navigation is part of the same conversation. Menus that link to your main collections pass internal weight to them, while a menu with forty items spreads it thin. Keep the top level short and put the categories that earn money there.
Migrations need both skills at the same table
Moving to Shopify from another platform is where the two jobs are inseparable. Every old address has to map to a new one with a 301 redirect, titles and descriptions need to carry over, and the new site has to be crawlable before the old one disappears.
Developers who ignore redirects can wipe out years of search visibility in a weekend. An SEO person who cannot edit the theme can only send a list of requests. Having both in one place avoids both outcomes.
A launch checklist that covers both jobs
Before a store goes live, check that the old URLs redirect, that the store is not set to password protection or blocked from search engines, that the sitemap is submitted in Search Console, and that analytics records a test order. Check the mobile product page on a real phone, not only a desktop browser.
After launch, watch Search Console for two to four weeks for new errors and unexpected drops, and fix what appears. A launch is not finished on the day the site goes public.
When it makes sense to separate them
Keep them apart if you already have a store you like and the issue is only visibility. Then you need an audit and fixes on what exists, not a rebuild. Keep them apart if your build is large and managed by an in-house team, in which case bring SEO in as a reviewer on their plan.
Also separate them if you simply want a store up quickly and plan to think about search later. That is a legitimate choice, as long as the build does not make later work harder. Ask the developer to set clean handles, add basic metadata and avoid app bloat from day one.
Apps, themes and the pull toward more features
Every new store ends up with a wish list: reviews, wishlists, upsells, pop-ups, a loyalty program. Each can be useful, but each also adds weight and sometimes duplicate markup. Decide which two or three actually affect sales, install those, and leave the rest for later.
Write down what each app does and who owns the subscription. It makes later clean-ups much faster.
What we do and what it costs
Shopify stores start at $2,000, and we build one working piece before you pay on larger projects. Ecommerce and Shopify SEO is a separate, optional service that we scope in writing. It is never bundled in, and there is no retainer to sign.
We are a founder-led studio in Truro, Nova Scotia, serving Canadian stores remotely, with a founder who has 25 years in IT. English and French are both covered, which helps if your store sells in Quebec and needs a bilingual setup.
Questions
Do I need a Shopify development and SEO agency, or two separate providers?
One provider is simpler for a new store or a migration, because the same person controls URLs, theme and redirects. Separate providers work when the store is already built and you only need search help.
Does a new Shopify store come SEO-ready?
It comes with sensible defaults like sitemaps and canonical tags. Collections, titles, speed and structured data still need deliberate choices.
Will SEO be included in the $2,000 starting price?
No. The starting price covers the store build. SEO is scoped and priced separately, and only if you want it.
Can you work in French?
Yes. We work in English and French, including bilingual stores.
