PR SEO services: what overlaps, and what is a separate job.
By Vijay Ara, Founder, BizIntegra Truro, Nova Scotia Updated October 25, 2026
PR and SEO feed each other, but they are different jobs. We do the SEO side. We do not run press distribution, and here is how to split the two sensibly.

The overlap
Public relations earns attention from other people: journalists, industry sites, local organizations. SEO makes your own site findable. The overlap is in three places. A mention in a respected outlet often links to you. People who read about you search your name afterwards. And a site that looks established is easier to trust.
None of that is automatic. A press release alone rarely moves rankings, and a link from a weak page is worth little. The value is in being written about by someone real, for a reason readers care about.
Brand searches matter more than most people think
When people hear about you and then type your business name into Google, that is a signal your brand is known, and it is the search you most want to win. Check what appears for your own name: your site, your profile, your reviews, and perhaps a news item. People who search for "PR SEO services" are usually asking whether press coverage can help their rankings, and the honest answer is: indirectly.
If something outdated or wrong shows up first, that is an SEO fix as much as a PR one. A clear About page, consistent business details and a complete Google Business Profile all help.
What we do, and what we do not
We do the site side: technical SEO, local SEO, on-page and content, and making sure any mention you earn lands on a page that can use it. We also review where your links come from and point you to the pages worth earning them.
We do not run press distribution, and we do not sell backlink packages. If you need a media list, press releases or pitching to journalists, that is a PR firm's work, and a good one will serve you better than we can.
Who should skip PR for now
If your site is slow, thin or missing key pages, hold off on outreach. Attention sent to a weak site converts poorly and is hard to earn twice. If you have no newsworthy angle yet, spending on a PR firm to invent one is a poor trade.
PR suits businesses with a real story: a launch, a milestone, an unusual service, a community tie. If that is you, fix the site first and then tell the story.
What a small business can do itself
Plenty. Tell customers when something noteworthy happens: a new service, an award, a community project. Offer a local newspaper or trade site something genuinely useful, such as a short expert comment. Be a reliable source for a reporter and they will remember you.
Sponsor or join a local group and make sure the listing links to your correct page. Ask suppliers and partners to link to you from their directories. These are slow, honest and cost mostly time.
Make your site ready before the coverage arrives
If a journalist writes about you and the link lands on a slow page with no clear next step, the attention is wasted. Before any outreach, check that the page you want mentioned loads quickly, says plainly what you do and has a clear way to get in touch.
It also helps to have something worth linking to: a short guide, a set of local figures you collected yourself, a clear explanation of a topic your customers ask about. People link to useful things, not to sales pages.
Keep a simple record of mentions. A search for your business name once a month, plus the links report in Search Console, will show who is writing about you. Where a mention names you without linking, a polite note to the author sometimes gets a link added.
Mentions without links still count for something
A mention with no link is not wasted. It can send readers to search for you, which supports the branded searches discussed above, and it builds familiarity that helps your listing get clicked later.
So do not judge PR only by links. Count branded searches in Search Console, enquiries that say "I read about you", and referral visits. Those show whether it is working better than a link count does.
A sensible split of the work
If you hire both, give each a clear lane. The PR firm decides the story, finds the outlets and handles journalists. The SEO side prepares the landing pages, checks that links point to the right place, fixes technical faults and reports on branded searches and referral traffic.
They should share a calendar. When a story is about to run, the SEO person needs a few days to make sure the destination page is ready. When the SEO report shows a topic gaining searches, the PR person can use it as a story angle.
For a very small business, one person often does both. That is fine at this scale. Just keep the two jobs separate in your head, so that neither is mistaken for the other.
How to judge a PR and SEO offer
Ask where the coverage will appear and whether you can see examples before paying. Be wary of promises of dozens of placements on sites no reader visits, because they do little for visibility and can look manipulative.
We keep the first step simple: a free SEO evaluation, back in two to three days, in plain English. If you want help after that, we scope a fixed price in writing. We never guarantee rankings, and we do not bundle ongoing SEO into anything.
Questions
Does PR help SEO?
It can, when coverage comes from a real outlet and links to the right page. It also grows searches for your brand name.
Do you offer press release distribution?
No. We handle the SEO side and leave media outreach to a PR firm.
Are press release links worth paying for?
Usually not on their own. Value comes from real coverage that people read, not from the link itself.
Where should I start?
With a free SEO evaluation, so the pages that earn mentions are ready to receive them.
