Hiring an international SEO agency: decide these things first.
By Vijay Ara, Founder, BizIntegra Truro, Nova Scotia Updated October 25, 2026
International SEO is mostly decisions about structure, language and which countries are worth the effort. Get those wrong and no global SEO agency can fix it with content alone.

- Country targeting versus language targeting
- Domains, subfolders and hreflang in plain English
- Translation versus real localization
- When to stay local a while longer
The question a good agency asks you first
Before anyone sells you international SEO, they should ask where your paying customers are. Not where visitors come from: where orders and enquiries come from. If almost all of it is Canada, going worldwide is a cost with no demand behind it.
A good consultant for international SEO begins with your data. Traffic by country, which markets already convert, where your shipping or service genuinely reaches. Then they pick one or two markets, not twenty.
Targeting a country or a language
These are separate choices, and people mix them up constantly. A language target serves everyone who reads Spanish. A country target serves people in Mexico, with Mexican prices, delivery and wording.
If your offer does not change by country, language targeting is simpler and cheaper. If prices, taxes, shipping or legal terms change, you need country versions. Canada makes it concrete: English and French are both official, and a Quebec customer expects French that reads like Quebec, not a machine pass over your English.
Domains, subfolders and hreflang
There are three common structures: a country domain per market (example.ca, example.de), a subdomain, or a subfolder such as example.com/fr/. Separate country domains send a strong local signal but split your authority and multiply the upkeep. For a small business, subfolders are usually the practical choice, because everything builds on one site.
Hreflang is the annotation that tells search engines which version belongs to which audience. It has to be reciprocal. If the English page points to the French one, the French one must point back, and each page should reference itself. Missing return links are the classic fault, and they quietly make the whole set useless.
Pair it with a correct canonical tag on every version, and keep each version crawlable. Do not redirect visitors automatically by IP address, because crawlers may never see your other versions.
Translation is not localization
Translation converts words. Localization changes what the page has to say for a different buyer: currency, units, examples, trust signals, and the phrase people really type. Keywords do not travel word for word. The term used in one country may be unusual in another.
Our real language capability is English and French, and we build and optimize in both. We do not claim to write in other languages. For those, use a native speaker, and we can handle the technical structure around their work.
When a small business should not go international yet
Wait if your home market is not working. If your Canadian pages do not rank for what you already sell, copies in three languages multiply the problem.
Wait if you cannot serve those customers. Search traffic you cannot ship to, or answer in time, hurts your reviews and earns nothing. And wait if you cannot maintain the extra pages, since stale translated pages age badly.
It makes sense for an ecommerce store that already ships abroad, a digital product with no geography, or a business with an existing customer base in a specific language.
Mistakes that make international sites underperform
Auto-redirecting visitors by location is the first. It feels helpful and often locks out both users and crawlers. Offer a visible language or country switch instead, and remember the choice.
Mixing languages on one page is the second. A French menu over English body text confuses readers and search engines alike. Each URL should be in one language.
The third is launching every version at once with thin copy. Ten shallow pages in a new language do less than three good ones. Start with the pages that earn money: top services or best-selling products, then expand.
And measure properly. Set up each country or language as its own view in your reports, so you can see whether a market is paying for itself before you build the next.
Choosing a global SEO company
A global SEO company that lists forty languages on its site is a red flag for a small business, because nobody writes well in forty languages in-house. Ask who actually writes the localized copy, whether native speakers review it, and how they handle the technical setup in each market.
People search for this in odd ways, from "global seo company" to "consultant seo international", and the offers behind those searches vary just as much. Judge the plan, not the label.
On cost, no honest agency can price this from a keyword. It depends on how many markets and languages, how many pages are translated, whether your platform handles language versions cleanly, and who writes the copy. Expect a quote to be scoped after someone has looked at your site.
Ask also for a plan limited to one extra market. If a proposal for worldwide SEO services starts with everything everywhere, push back. Proving one market first costs less and teaches you what the next one needs.
What we bring, and what we do not
We run VisaTalents, a site with more than 40,000 generated pages, so crawling, indexing, sitemaps and caching at scale are daily work for us. Those same issues multiply once you have several language versions.
We start with a free SEO evaluation, then scope a fixed price in writing. We never guarantee rankings, and we will say plainly if a market is not worth entering.
Questions
What does an international SEO agency actually do?
It chooses target markets, sets up the site structure and hreflang, adapts content for each audience and tracks results by country. The structure work is the part that is hard to fix later.
Should I use subfolders or separate domains?
For most small businesses, subfolders. One domain keeps authority together and costs less to maintain.
Is machine translation good enough?
On its own, usually not for pages that need to sell. Have a native speaker review it, especially product and service pages.
Do you offer worldwide SEO services?
We work remotely across Canada, in English and French. For other languages we cover the technical structure, and a native speaker should write the copy.
