What is the best way to build a website?

By Vijay Ara, Founder, BizIntegra Truro, Nova Scotia Updated October 25, 2026

For a simple site you have time to look after, a builder is the quickest start. For a site that has to bring in enquiries, WordPress or a professional build is the better way. Here is how to decide.

The three ways to build a website

You can use a website builder, build on a platform such as WordPress, or have a professional build it for you. All three can produce a good site. They differ in how much of your time they take and how much control you end up with.

A builder gives you ready-made templates and a drag and drop editor. It is the fastest route, but you work inside its limits and the site lives on its platform. WordPress gives you more freedom and a large library of themes and plugins, and more to maintain: updates, backups, security and the occasional plugin conflict. A professional build gives you a site designed around your business, with the technical work done for you.

Can you build a website for free?

You can start for free on many builders, but a free plan usually comes with limits: the builder's name in your web address, adverts or branding, and fewer features. To use your own domain name and take bookings or payments, you normally move to a paid plan. Check each builder's own pricing page, because plans change.

Free also costs your time. Choosing a template, writing the pages, sizing photos and fixing what breaks can take weeks of attention. That is fine for a very simple site and expensive for a busy owner whose hour is worth more than the saving.

If you search for a free build website option, treat it as a way to test an idea, not as the final site for a business that depends on enquiries.

How to choose

Ask three questions. What must the website do: show your details, take quote requests, sell products, connect to your other software? How much time can you spend on it each month? And how much does it matter that Google can find it?

If the answer is "show my details, I have time, and I do not need to rank", a builder is enough. If the website has to bring in work, a professional build usually pays for itself: ours starts at $3,500, at a fixed price in writing, usually live in three to four weeks. A Shopify store starts from $2,000.

Which route fits which business

A builder suits a hobby, a club, a portfolio or a one-person service that gets all its work by referral. You want a page that says who you are and how to call.

WordPress suits a business that expects to grow the site over time: more pages, a blog, bookings, a bilingual version, a store. It rewards someone who will keep it updated, or who pays someone to.

A professional build suits an owner who would rather spend the time on customers, or whose site needs to rank, load fast on a phone and convert visitors. It is also the safer choice when a bad site would cost you jobs while you learn.

We would not recommend a custom build for a three-page brochure site with no search ambitions. A builder is cheaper, and the difference would not show in your results.

What to prepare before you start

Whichever way you go, the slow part is rarely the software. It is the content. Write down your services in plain words, collect real photos of your work and team, and note the questions customers ask before they buy. Decide the one action you want a visitor to take: call, request a quote, book or buy.

Also settle who owns the domain name and hosting account, and make sure it is in your name. That detail is easy to miss, and getting it back from a former developer is painful.

Mistakes that cost the most

Choosing on looks alone. A beautiful template that loads slowly on a phone loses visitors. Building a large site before you know what customers ask for. Skipping the basics Google needs, such as clear page titles and a mobile layout that works. And locking your only copy of the site inside a platform you cannot leave.

For larger projects we build one working piece before you pay, so you see how it looks and behaves first. Ask any builder or developer what you will have if you part ways.

Questions

What is the best website to build a website with?

It depends on the job. For a simple, small site a website builder is the quickest. For a site that must book work and rank on Google, WordPress or a professional build gives you more control.

Can I build a free website for my business?

You can, on a free plan with limits. Most businesses move to a paid plan to use their own domain and take bookings or payments.

Is it better to hire someone?

Hire someone when the site has a job to do, or when your time is worth more than the saving. For a quick, low-risk start, a builder is fine.

How long does it take?

A simple builder site can be live in a weekend if your content is ready. Our professional builds usually take three to four weeks.
