Web optimization companies: which kind do you need?

By Vijay Ara, Founder, BizIntegra Truro, Nova Scotia Updated October 25, 2026

"Web optimization" is a loose phrase that covers speed work, conversion work and SEO. Pick the wrong kind of company and you pay for a fix to a problem you do not have.

The same two words, three different jobs

Ask five agencies what web optimization means and you can get five answers. Some mean making pages load faster. Some mean getting more of your visitors to call or buy. Some mean getting the site to show up in search.

All three are legitimate. They need different skills, different tools and different ways of measuring success. A company that is very good at one may be mediocre at the others, so the first job is to decide which problem you actually have.

Speed optimization: making the site load and respond quickly

Think of this as the plumbing. Visitors never praise a fast site, but they leave a slow one within seconds.

This is engineering work. A speed specialist looks at image sizes and formats, render-blocking scripts, theme and plugin weight, caching, server response time, fonts, and the Core Web Vitals reported for your real visitors.

Signs you need it: pages feel slow on a phone, PageSpeed Insights shows red scores, or the site got slower after you added plugins. Speed fixes are usually measurable, which makes them a fair thing to buy for a defined price. We do this work, mostly on WordPress and Shopify sites.

Conversion optimization: turning visits into enquiries

Here the site loads fine and people visit, but few of them call, book or buy. The work is about the page itself: the headline, the offer, the order of information, the form length, trust signals and the path to the button.

Honest conversion work needs enough traffic to learn from. A site with a few hundred visits a month cannot run meaningful split tests, and anyone promising a percentage lift without seeing your numbers is guessing. For smaller sites, the useful approach is simpler: read the pages as a stranger would, watch where people drop off in your analytics, fix the obvious friction and then check again.

Search optimization: being found in the first place

This is SEO, and it overlaps with the others. Titles and headings, internal links, crawlability, redirects, structured data, local listings and content all belong here. It is about whether Google can find, understand and trust your pages.

We do technical, local, ecommerce and bilingual SEO, and we start with a free SEO evaluation. Technical fixes can show up in weeks. Competitive terms usually take months, and we never guarantee rankings. If a company does, treat that as the warning it is.

How to tell which one you need

Run three quick checks. Load your site on a phone over mobile data and see how it feels. Look in Google Search Console at how many people see your pages in search versus click them. Then look at your analytics to see how many visitors turn into an enquiry.

Write the numbers down before anyone touches the site. Without a baseline for load time, search clicks and enquiries per month, nobody can show that the work did anything, including us.

Slow and clunky points to speed work. Plenty of visits but no enquiries points to conversion. Few impressions, or pages missing from Google, points to SEO. Often it is a mix, and speed is the sensible first fix because it helps the other two.

What we do not do, and who to hire instead

We do not run paid ads. If your plan is mainly Google Ads or social campaigns, you need a media buyer, not a site optimizer. We can make the landing page faster, though, which tends to lower what each click costs.

Dedicated conversion research, with user testing and heavy experiment programs, is also a specialist field. We will say honestly if your case needs it. What we offer is speed work, SEO and practical page fixes, with a written price before we start. Bug fixes begin at $120, content updates are $90, and developers are $55 an hour for bigger jobs.

Before you sign with any optimization company, ask what they will measure, what they will touch on your site and whether you keep full access to everything they change.

Questions

What do web optimization companies actually do?

It varies. Some focus on speed, some on conversion rate and some on SEO. Ask which of the three they mean and what numbers they will report.

Does a faster website improve search rankings?

Speed is one factor among many, and it will not rescue weak content. It does improve the experience for visitors, which usually helps enquiries even when rankings do not move.

How do I know if a company is any good?

They should look at your actual site before quoting, explain findings in plain English and agree a fixed scope in writing. Be wary of guarantees and vague monthly deliverables.

Can I just optimize my own site?

Some of it, yes. Compressing images, removing unused plugins and rewriting weak headlines are within reach. Server tuning, script loading and technical SEO are quicker with someone who has done them before.
