What a WordPress SEO agency actually works on.

By Vijay Ara, Founder, BizIntegra Truro, Nova Scotia Updated October 25, 2026

WordPress SEO services are mostly about what your plugins, theme and settings are doing to the site, not about adding another plugin. Here is what a good WordPress SEO company checks, and what you can look at yourself today.

Start with the one setting that can hide the whole site

In WordPress, under Settings and Reading, there is a box asking search engines not to index the site. Developers tick it during a build and sometimes forget to clear it at launch. A WordPress SEO agency checks it in the first five minutes, along with the robots.txt file and the page-level noindex flags your SEO plugin may have set.

This is why a WP SEO agency audit often finds the biggest problem is not strategy at all.

Plugins: one SEO plugin, not three

Yoast and Rank Math are both widely used, and either can do the job. The trouble starts when two SEO plugins run together, or when a theme adds its own meta tags on top. You get duplicate titles, conflicting canonical tags, and two sitemaps. Pick one and disable the rest. Whatever you call it, "WordPress SEO services" should start with your actual site, its theme, its plugins and its speed, not with a generic checklist.

Beyond the SEO plugin, count the others. Sliders, form builders, social feeds and security plugins can each add scripts to every page. An agency should ask what each one is for and remove what is not.

Themes and page builders

Heavy themes and visual page builders produce a lot of markup, and sometimes headings chosen for looks rather than meaning, with three H1s on a page or none. Not every builder is a problem, but nested containers and unused widgets add weight that slows mobile loading.

A WordPress SEO service provider will check heading order, how images are inserted, and whether the page renders the main content without waiting on scripts. Sometimes the right call is to leave the builder alone and trim around it, because a rebuild costs more than the problem is worth.

Speed: hosting, caching and images

Speed comes down to hosting quality, caching, image sizes and the number of requests per page. A cheap shared host with no page caching will lose against a lean site on decent hosting every time, whatever else you fix.

Check Core Web Vitals in Search Console first, so you see real-visitor data rather than a single test result. Then test the slowest templates, usually the home page, a blog post and a service page, and fix what they have in common.

Permalinks, categories and thin archives

By default the platform creates archive pages for tags, authors, dates and categories. On a small business site those are mostly thin and repetitive, and can dilute the pages you want found. Many sites are better off with tag and date archives set to noindex.

Permalink structure matters too. Changing it on a live site needs redirects, so it is a decision for the start of a project, not a casual tweak.

Updates, security and the quiet ways sites break

An outdated plugin is more than a security risk. A forced update can change how a template renders, and a site that was fine on Monday can have missing titles or a broken sitemap by Friday. A WordPress SEO company should check the basics after any major update: titles, canonical tags, the sitemap and a few key pages in the URL inspection tool.

Hacked sites bring a separate problem. Injected spam pages can fill the index with junk before anyone notices. If Search Console shows hundreds of pages you never made, treat it as a security job first and an SEO job second.

Content that earns the click

Once the platform is sound, the work turns to pages. Each service or product page needs one clear topic, a title written for the person searching, and internal links from related pages. Blog posts that answer real customer questions help, as long as they link to the pages that sell.

Many WordPress sites carry dozens of old posts that nobody reads. Merging or removing them, and redirecting the old addresses, often helps more than writing something new.

Multisite and larger sites

Multisite adds its own questions: whether each site has its own sitemap and Search Console property, how domains map, and whether shared plugins create the same fixes across every site. A mistake in one network-wide setting repeats everywhere.

Our own VisaTalents site has 40,000+ generated pages, which means crawl control, sitemaps and caching on large builds are things we have worked through ourselves rather than read about. Most client sites are far smaller, but the habits carry over.

Choosing between providers

Whatever you call them, a company, a service provider or a freelancer, ask the same thing: who opens the site and does the work, and can you speak to them. Ask for a sample of a past findings document with client details removed, and read how specific it is.

Good ones name the plugin, the setting and the page. A weak one lists "optimize site speed" and "improve content" and stops there.

How we work

We are a founder-led studio in Truro, Nova Scotia, working remotely across Canada, and our WordPress SEO company work starts with a free evaluation. You get plain English findings in about two to three days, then a fixed scope and written price if you want us to proceed.

Ongoing SEO is optional, never bundled and never on a retainer you have to sign. We do not guarantee rankings. Technical fixes can show in weeks, competitive terms usually take months.

Questions

Is WordPress good for SEO?

Yes, when it is set up carefully. It gives you control over titles, URLs and structure, but plugins and themes can also introduce problems that need cleaning up.

Do I need Yoast or Rank Math?

You need one capable SEO plugin or an equivalent setup. Which one matters less than using it properly and not running two together.

Will you change my theme?

Only if the theme is the real problem. Often we can fix titles, speed and indexation inside the current theme.

Do you work with WordPress sites outside Nova Scotia?

Yes. Work is remote across Canada, with in-person meetings in Nova Scotia by arrangement.
