How to hire a WordPress SEO expert.

By Vijay Ara, Founder, BizIntegra Truro, Nova Scotia Updated October 25, 2026

Before you hire a WordPress SEO expert, decide what access you will give and ask five questions. Both take less than an hour and prevent most of the bad outcomes we hear about.

Hand over the least access that gets the job done

The first mistake when you hire a WordPress SEO expert is sharing your administrator password in an email. Do not. Create a separate user for them instead, so you can see what they change and remove the account when they finish.

For an audit, read access is enough: Google Search Console, Google Analytics and an Editor or view-level login. Administrator rights are only needed when someone is changing plugins, settings or theme files, and you should know exactly when that starts.

Ask for a staging copy before anything risky

A staging site is a private copy of your website where changes can be tested before they go live. Many hosts offer one in a click. Anything that touches a theme, a plugin or the permalink structure should happen there first, then be moved across once it works.

Take a full backup before any work, whatever the plan. A WordPress SEO expert for hire who shrugs at backups is telling you something.

Five questions to ask

Start with what they will check first on your site. A good answer mentions indexation settings, the robots file, the SEO plugin setup and Search Console errors, before any talk of keywords.

Next, ask which of your plugins they would remove, and how they would decide. You want a reasoned approach: what does it do, is it used, does it duplicate another tool.

Third is how they test changes, and staging, backups and a rollback plan are the right answer. Fourth is what they will report back, and how. Look for leads, calls and clicks from search, not only a screenshot of rankings.

Last, find out what happens to the work if you stop. The content, accounts and settings should stay with you. Avoid anyone who holds your login or keeps work behind a contract.

What the first two weeks should look like

Expect a short kickoff, then a read-only review of the site, Search Console and Analytics. The first deliverable is a written list of findings ranked by impact, with a note on which items need staging and which are safe to change directly.

Nothing is edited until you approve the list. From there, changes should be made in small batches so that if a traffic dip appears, it is clear which change caused it. Ask for a short note after each batch saying what was changed and where.

Keep your own copy of key settings too: a screenshot or export of the SEO plugin configuration and the current robots file. It takes five minutes and makes any rollback straightforward.

Warning signs

Walk away from a guaranteed first-page promise, a package that sells backlinks as the main deliverable, or someone who wants to install a new SEO plugin before looking at the old one. None of these tell you anything about their skills, and some can hurt the site.

Be careful, too, with anyone who says the problem is WordPress itself and proposes a full rebuild without evidence. Sometimes a rebuild is right. It should come with a reason you can verify.

Local business or national site

Which expert is right depends on what you sell. A local service business needs someone who understands Google Business Profile, service-area pages and reviews alongside the WordPress settings. A national content site needs more attention on structure, internal links and crawl behavior.

Say which one you are in your first message. It saves a round of back and forth and tells a good expert where to look.

Checking the work afterward

You do not need technical skill to verify the work of an expert. Open Search Console two weeks after each batch of changes and look at Pages (indexed versus not indexed), Core Web Vitals and Performance. Errors should be falling and clicks steady or rising.

Visit the site on your phone, click through your main service pages, submit your own contact form and make sure the confirmation arrives. Plenty of SEO changes break forms or menus by accident, and a customer will find it before a report does.

Expert, agency or developer

When the problem is technical, a developer who understands SEO is often the best fit. If it is content and local visibility, an SEO specialist with WordPress knowledge will do more. Many sites need a mix, and a small studio can cover both without handing you between two firms.

Our guide on how to choose an SEO company covers the wider decision if you are unsure which applies.

Questions

What access does an expert need for a WordPress SEO audit?

Search Console and Analytics access, plus an Editor or limited admin user. Full administrator access is only needed once changes begin.

Should I give my main admin password?

No. Create a separate user for each person and remove it when the work ends.

Can I hire someone for a single fix instead of a long project?

Yes. A one-off job such as cleaning up indexation or fixing titles is a normal request, and it is a good way to test how someone works before a bigger commitment.

Do I really need a staging site?

For anything involving plugins, themes or permalinks, yes. It lets problems appear on a copy, not on the site your customers see.

How do I know the expert is not harming my site?

Ask for a written list of changes, keep backups, and check Search Console for new errors in the weeks after.
